Safety Tips for Pets this Fall
We owe it to our "best friends" to look out for them!
Protect Your Pets at Halloween
Halloween can be fun with parties, trick-or-treat, and children of all ages in costumes. But it can also become very stressful for your pets. Taking a few precautionary steps can help your dog or cat make it through the scary time without mishap.
- Bring all pets inside your home. People roaming about can be frightening, gates can be left open, and pets can become lost or disoriented.
- Even pets inside the home can become distraught with constant doorbell ringing, "strange" people coming to the door, and party activity. To help your pet remain comfortable, find a quiet room away from Halloween activities for him/her to spend the evening.
- Keep your pet safe by keeping all food, candy, candy wrappers, and decorations away. And restrict animals' access to jack-o-lanterns, candles, and other dangerous items.
- Halloween also poses other dangers as pets can become the victims of pranksters' cruel tricks. Prior to and during Halloween, keep a close eye on your pets, particularly if you or your neighbors have a black cat.
Many Holiday Hazards Can Harm Our Pets
Holiday decorations, tinsel, flowers, Christmas trees, New Year's noise, holiday travel: all of these can have dangerous consequences for our pets if we do not take care. Please remember, too, human food is not for pets. Literally hundreds of our foods are toxic for pets and can cause serious pain, illness, and death. More information about the many holiday hazards affecting pets is available from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals at www.aspca.org/apcc. Please take a few moments to read and make note of this material; we owe it to our beloved furry friends to keep them safe from harm.
