Current Needs at the Shelter
This is one of the most difficult times of the year for the shelter, as we see a significant increase in animal intakes. The high volume of new arrivals has placed a real strain on our resources. If you can help, we are experiencing shortages of the following items: paper towels and clay (non-scoopable, non-clumping) cat litter.

For other giving opportunities please see our list of donation programs. We also detail critical supplies and other items of need on our updated Wish List. If you can help, your donation of these items is very much appreciated. Thank you! Thank you!

Beware the Dangers of Summer Heat
Summer is a great time to get outdoors and enjoy some quality time with your dog. But when it comes to heat-related illnesses, the months of May and June are especially dangerous. Here's why.

We're already having very warm days at or above 80 degrees, and your dog's body is not used to the heat. Because dogs cannot disperse heat with sweat like we do, they take longer to cool down by panting ... not to mention they're covered in a heavy fur coat!

NEVER leave your dog in a hot car. Not for 15 minutes. Not for 10 minutes. Not 5 minutes. It is simply too dangerous. Temperatures can quickly rise to well over 100 degrees inside a car, which can be fatal within minutes to animals. If you are going somewhere where your dog cannot accompany you, please leave your dog at home. And when outside, make sure there is a shady spot where he can escape from the sun and always make sure fresh cool water is available. Remember, if the weather feels warm to you, it will feel even warmer to your dog.

Also, please keep an eye out for animals in your neighborhood who may need assistance during hot weather and for any animal you see in an unattended car. For help in these situations, PLEASE immediately call us at 785-843-6835 or e-mail the shelter to report it.

Godric the kittenA few highlights:
• The story of Percy, saved because of Max's Club funds. After being adopted about three years ago, Percy was returned to the shelter. Sadly, when he came back to us he was extremely underweight, suffered from heartworms, and had a serious eye infection.
• The new Natural Health Care Animal Clinic in Lawrence, including a little story on a sweet little kitten named Godric (at right) with radial nerve damage. In an attempt to restore function and avoid amputation in her right front paw, Godric is receiving acupuncture and homeopathic nerve supplements.
